News for May 23rd - 27th

Literacy:
- Work on and present "Flying Solo" projects (Monday)
- Finishing up "Boy in the Striped Pajamas" - watching the movie

Science:
- Wednesday, May 26th is "Operation Egg Drop" Day - students will be constructing their own device to hold an egg to be dropped at various heights, the whole 5th grade will be participating so bring in your materials on Wednesday morning!

*5C has 1 marble left to fill in their postive choices jar - if they earn the marble Thursday, May 26th will be their reward day (along with Mrs. Cony's birthday party)!

**We will be using our white handkerchiefs for a special project on Tuesday, make sure you have brought one in!

***Friday, May 27th is Field Day from 10:30 - 12:30: Wear comfortable running shoes, shorts and your green 5C field day shirt! Go Green!

News for May 16th - 20th

Literacy:
- Finish reading "Flying Solo" pgs. 95 - 138
- Finish "Flying Solo" packet: plot line, characters sketches (in detail), vocabulary, and comprehension questions - completed packet due Wednesday, May 18th!
- "Flying Solo" test will be Wednesday May 18th - use packet to study everything.
- We will be choosing "Flying Solo" projects to do in groups on thursday, friday, and the following Monday

Math:
- We will be focusing mostly on our novel project and our social studies projects.

Social Studies:

- Monday, May 16th: Finish up tri-folds (only about 1 hr of time will be given) - Oral presentations in class (graded). This means everything should be finished by 10:30!

- Tuesday, May 17th: 5th grade rotations - The students will take turns giving their presentation to students in 5A and 5B - stamp/sticker/design for individual passports due today!

- Wednesday, May 18th: AST World Tour: 10:30 - 12:30! We will be setting up our projects on the court around 10:10, changing into our tour guide/typical clothes, preparing our areas with typical food and/or props, and getting ready for people to come see our projects. Parents and family members are welcome to come see our projects at any time, but students will be required to stay at their desginated area during the whole tour.

* The 5th grade farewell and lunch sponsored by the Character Education department will be Thursday, May 19th from 11:30 - 12:30 (lunch will be provided).
** T-shirts for field day are being ordered, but we'd like each student to bring in a white handkerchief (panuelo) by Friday, May 20th so we can use them as well. These will not return in their original condition and we'd like stuents' initials/name to be written on them with permanent marker.

News for May 9 - 13th

Literacy:
- We are continuing our novel study on "Flying Solo" by Ralph Fletcher. Students are working in class on reading the chapters, answering comprehension questions, defining vocabulary words, outlining plot, and sketching out characters. We will be working as a class, groups, and individually. If students use their time wisely they should keep up the pace; our literacy period will be used for reading and writing time will be dedicated to the packet that goes along with the book.

Math:
- Finishing up PLATO testing
- We will be doing some review and going further in depth with graphing and interpreting data. Chapter 7 in the Math book, lessons, 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. We will do an assessment on Friday over the material.

Social Studies:
- All research for our World Tour country projects should be completed by Monday morning. Students have had ample time to work in class and will have more time this coming week. Written papers are due Thursday, May 12th (about 2 paragraphs per bullet point along with bibliography of sources) so students will have time to work on their tri-fold parts. Tri-folds should be purchased and brought into class no later than Thursday, May 12th!

News for May 2nd - 6th

Literacy:
- Value of the Month: patience (5th grade is in charge of the bulletin board, come check it out)
- Mother's Day projects
- Starting our novel study: "Flying Solo" by Ralph Fletcher

Math:
- Finish Review work booklet in time for PLATO tests: PLATO test #3 will be Tuesday and Wednesday, May 3rd and 4th - It is very important that you are here those days to have enough time to take this important tests.

Social Studies:

- We will be working on our World Tour projects for the next two weeks. The requirement list has been given to students so they know exactly what is expected of them for their own country. This is an individual project worth the entire quarter's social studies grade as well as grades in literacy. Click on the link to see the requirement page. Stay tuned for more details as the weeks go along but the final tour where the rest of the school and parents are invited to attend will be Wednesday, May 18th!

*Mother's Day Literacy Activity will be Thursday, May 5th from 11:20 - 12:10. Please come help us celebrate the special women in our lives!
**AST Musical "Disney on Broadway" will be Thursday and Friday, May 5th and 6th! Come support our school, buy a ticket in the book store or at the door!

- Personal Narratives on Easter Break (Semana Santa)
- 6+1 Trait: Sentence Fluency
- Reading Assessments (fluency and comprehension)

Math:
- Third and Final Plato Test - Next Week May 3rd and 4th
- Review and Complete Order of Operations
- Math Review of all topics learned this year to prepare for PLATO

Social Studies:
- The entire 5th grade is starting their World Tour, each section is assigned a different part of the world. 5A - The Americas, 5B - Africa, and our class, 5C - Eurasia.
- This week we will explore what is Eurasia and the countries that it contains
- Students are to come up with a Top 10 list of the countries they'd like to do as an individual project. Follow the links to see the country lists: Asia and Europe
- Country selection will be held on Wednesday, April 27th - No student will be allowed to change their country after Friday, April 29th.
- We will be researching different aspects of the country throughout the weeks

*Earth Day Picnic - Thursday, April 28th: Contest for who use the least amount of trash! Bring your lunch to school in all reusable, washable containers. We will eat lunch together on this day!

News for March 18th - April 1st

Don't forget that Library projects are due on Monday, March 18th! Literacy: - Finish persuasive essays, due Tuesday, March 29th (follow the rubric to get all A+'s and turn it in with your essay) - April is Poetry Month so we are going to begin our unit on poetry. Here are some of the types we will be working on this week: couplet, triplet, quatrain, cinquain, acrostic, alliteration, diamonte, and concrete. Math: - Because of scheduling issues and needing more time we will be reviewing Math Ch. 14 on Monday and the test will be Tuesday, March 29th - Fun Math activity on Tuesday, bring a banana if you can! - Begin Chapter 15 on probability, lessons 1 and 2 *The team from AdvancED will be here at school observing our school Monday - Wednesday. ** No after school activities involving staff members will be held Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday (musical, advanced Math club, etc...) ***The 3rd and final Bullying presentation will be Thursday, March 31st. ****Thursday afterschool the 5th grade girls will be measured for their costumes!

Changes for the week

Because of scheduling issues, the Chapter 14 Math Test will be moved to next Tuesday, March 29th along with the due date for the published persuasive essay. Students received the rubric yesterday.

Remember that tomorrow is a early dismissal at 11:00am and parent teacher conferences are until 3:30, if you haven't signed up for a time to meet with me there are still many slots available. If one of those times doesn't work, please email me when you are available.

Tomorrow there will be a Scholastic book fair as well as the items in the lost in found on display. Check them both out!

Literacy:
- Persuasive writing process, choose arguement and prewrite (research), draft, revise and proofread, and finally publish
- Published copy of Persuasive writing due next Monday, March 28th
- Working on conventions - spelling/grammar/punctuation
- Review and assess word wall words - Dictated word wall test (10 sentences) Friday, March 25th

Math:
- Finish Chapter 14, lessons 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8
- We will be doing hands on activities and review, don't forget about the MacMillian Math site to review any chapter 14 lesson that you struggled with!
- Chapter 14 Test will be Friday, March 25th (we will review in the morning and take the test after recess before early dismissal)

News for March 14th - 18th

*4th quarter begins Monday, March 14th!

Literacy:
- Finish discussion on Self - Discipline; reflection
- Continue types of Expository writing - Persuasive writing
- Father's Day projects

Math:
- Review Ch. 13 - Monday 3/14
- Test over Chapter 13 will be Tuesday, March 15th - use your vocabulary cards to study
- Begin Chapter 14: lessons 1, 2, and 3

*We will be dedicating extra time this quarter to Math because 5th grade math scores are low on the average!

**St. Patrick's Day is Thursday, March 17th - we will be having a small celebration at 1:15 after recess if anyone wishes to bring something green to share with the rest of the class!

***The Final Lap for Miles for Smiles will be held on Thursday, March 17th afterschool at 2:45. Students still have an opportunity to participate and ask for sponsorship but T-shirts have already been ordered. Sponsorship money should be returned to school in an envelope on Wednesday, March 16th!

****Father's Day Celebrations will be held in 5th grade on Friday, March 18th from 11:20 - 12:10 in each sections' classrooms. We hope that the special men in our students' lives can join us for the literacy based celebration!

News for March 7th - 11th

*No school Friday, March 11th for Spring Break! Friday is the last day of the 3rd quarter, so let's finish strong!

Literacy:
- finishing Black History Month Biographies (most students are finished typing)
- work on creative way to present biography - Biographies are due and presentations will be given Wednesday, March 9th and Thursday, March 10th (days and time slots will be drawn on Tuesday)
- Value of the month: Discipline and self-discipline

Math:
- review Ch. 6 graphing ordered pairs and the coordinate plane
- Continue Ch. 13 lessons 6, 7, 8 and 9
- Reading Log for Friday, March 11th - read Math pgs. 594-595 and do the questions in Math notebook

Social Studies:
- We will be writing bill proposals as the 5th grade Congress to present to the "President" (Mrs. Martinez) to approve. We will be working alongside 5A to come up with feasable ideas to present in writing.
- Review and the Three Branches of government Test (ch. 9 lessons 3 -4) will be Thursday, March 10th - study pictures on blog, notes, and book.

News for February 28th - March 4th

Literacy:
- Continue working on Black History Month Biographies - requirements/rubric - typed portion due Friday, March 4th!
- We will be typing our 2nd drafts for a published copy in class please bring a USB stick to save your work!
- Learning about the value for March: Discipline

Math:
- Continue with Chapter 13 - review angles/triangles and quadrilaterals
- Review of graphing Ch. 6 lessons 4 and 5 on order pairs and graphing functions also using integers (negative/positive) and the coordinate plane (quadrants)

Social Studies:
- Finish the legislative branch and how a bill becomes a law
- Discuss the executive and judicial branches
- We are construction a "three branches of government tree" in the hallway, come check out the finished project towards the end of the week!

*Remember that Friday, March 11th is the last day of the quarter, so finish this one strong!
** Don't forget to bring in your plastic containers/plates instead of using Stryofoam at the cafeteria, collect 5 tokens and get a prize!
*** Monday, March 7th will be the HS Environmental club activity of creating the Scarlett Macaw as art from the sky. Check out the awesome pics at this link!

News for Feb. 14th - 18th

Literacy:
- Valentine's day activities
- Continue working on Fairness, we will be tape recording our skits on Wednesday/Thursday
- Black History Month introduction

Math:
- Valentine's graphing project on Monday
- Finish Ch. 12 lessons, 4, 5, 6, and 7 (review and test will be next week)
- Incorporating changes of matter from science

Science:
- Chapter 14 States of Matter and Changes of State - lessons 1 and 2
- Will we be using literacy and math time to review science this week as well.
- The chapter 13 and 14 combined assessment test will be Friday, Feb. 18th
- Students need to bring in 1 zip-lip gallon sized freezer bag, 1 zip lip quart sized (bigger than the sandwich size) freezer bag, and a hand towel with student initials (will be returned home) by Thursday, February 17th!

*Monday is free Valentine's Day Colors' Day
**If you want to bring Valentine's treats or cards to class you may if you bring enough to share with the whole class. Our class party will be @ 11:10.
***Remember to bring in your 2 dozen cookies on Monday before 8:00am if you haven't!

* This week we will be selling Cookie Grams for Friendship month to help out Casitas Kennedy. Don't forget to help out with your committee and bring in your 2 dozen cookies on Thursday, Feb. 10th or Monday morning by 8:00 am Feb. 14th.

Literacy:
- Finishing up Folklore: Booklets due Tuesday, Feb. 8th at 12:00/noon - requirements

Can you believe that its been 99 days of school already? The school year is flying by really fast and since Monday will be the 100th day of classes we are going to do a mini celebration for our accomplishments. Don't forget we are going to do 100th day ice cream sundaes, so bring in the toppings you signed up for!

Literacy:

- Continue with Folklore: parables, myths, and tall tales
- Working on Folk Narrative books in class.

Math:

- Review fractions in Chapter 10
- Test on Chapter 10 will be Wednesday, January 19th (use the Mac Millian website to review lessons and take a practice test exam)!

News for January 10th - 14th

Literacy:
- Review and Test on Tuesday, Jan. 11th on Plot - students will be read a story and they will have to identify the parts of plot and fill out the Plot Template worksheet.

Math:
- Continue with Chapter 10 - Adding and Subtraction Fractions: lessons 2, 3, 4, 7, and 10

Science:
- Begin Unit E, Chapter 13 on Matter - Lesson 1

*Friday, Jan. 14th is a late start, classes begin at 9:30!
**First session of PLATO test will be Friday during Computers!
*** Report Cards go home this Friday, Jan. 14th!

Auditions for this year's musical: Disney on Broadway!
- 5th Grade Auditions will be Friday, Jan. 14th - 2:45 - 4:00
- They will be held in the Multi-purpose room
- Each student must fill out a audition form (sent in the email to parents) and will not be allowed to audition without one!
- If a student does not audition, then they will not participate

Welcome back to 3rd Quarter, 2nd Semester, and a New Year 2011!
Miss Cony and I would like to thank everyone who gave us such lovely and delicious gifts this holiday, they were greatly appreciated. Many thanks to all; we hope that each and everyone had a blessed Christmas holiday and are enjoying the new year!

Literacy:
- Review Plot

- New Year's Resolutions

Math:
- Review fractions, factors, muliples, prime/composite
- Review finding LCD and begin learning about adding fractions

Social Studies:
- Review timelines
- Create Class timeline on selected topic, work with partners
